About us
Photonics Bretagne
As a photonics innovation hub located at the heart of the Photonics Park in Lannion, Brittany, we represent and federate the Breton photonics ecosystem. The role of our association is to support innovation, to promote and to develop Breton photonics by acting as a link between the various stakeholders in our network (industry, academia and policy makers at the regional or international level, in photonics or application sectors…).
Our activities are divided into :
- A cluster of over 120 members (companies, research and training centres, support institutions) responsible for coordinating the sector and offering customized continuing education courses.
- Research & Technology Organisation (RTO) with expertise in special optical fibres, components and biophotonics engineering.
Our Activities
Sector Coordination
We support Breton manufacturers with the integration and use of photonic technologies. We promote our members’ economic and industrial development through various actions: technology watch and consultancy, networking, structuring of collaborative projects (regional, national or European), organization of technology or business events…
Training
We act as a link between education and industry: We support academic centres in the structuring and dissemination of initial training, we play an active role in promoting photonics among young people, and we offer continuing education in optics and photonics, lasers, optical fibres, components, sensors…
Fibres & Components
We develop innovative, tailor-made solutions with extensive expertise in special optical fibres: from modelling and design to fabrication and characterization (Perfos product range: microstructured solid-core or hollow-core fibres, active fibres, cables, metal coatings, components).
Biophotonics
Our ambition is to accelerate the development of photonic innovations and the use of photonic technologies for agricultural, agri-food, biomedical and environmental applications. Our activities range from project engineering, proof-of-concept, development of optical sensor systems, and much more.

History
Creation of PERFOS (Plateforme d’Etudes et de Recherches sur les Fibres Optiques Spéciales) in Lannion. As an association under the French law of 1901, its objective is to sustain the special optical fibre manufacturing technologies previously developed at France Télécom, and then at Highwave Optical Technologies. It also aims to pool technological resources for the local ecosystem.
Following a call for projects launched by the DATAR (Délégation interministérielle à l’Aménagement du Territoire et à l’Attractivité Régionale), the association is awarded the Cluster label. The association takes over activities previously carried out by Technopôle Anticipa. It becomes Photonics Bretagne, a Photonics Innovation Hub, and brings together a technology platform and a cluster.
The hub is accredited as a Research and Technology Organization (RTO). The project to build a Photonics Park, unique in France, comes to fruition and is inaugurated in July. Photonics Bretagne and its new 13-metre-high fibre drawing tower finds itself at its very heart. Numerous investments, notably in new state-of-the-art equipment, enables Photonics Bretagne to develop its skills and become a national, European and global centre of innovation in photonics.
Photonics Bretagne diversifies into biophotonics and agrophotonics. A new outdoor laboratory is set up. It enables research, testing and characterization to continue in an environment closer to real conditions. This complements existing skills to better meet innovation needs of application sectors, specifically for agriculture and agri-food.
