Photonics Bretagne’s 1st participation in Industry Week: pupils from Lycée Félix Le Dantec discover photonics

28/11/2024 – For the first time, Photonics Bretagne opened its doors during Industry Week, a major national event aimed at informing the general public, and young people in particular, about innovative careers in industry. On Tuesday 26 November, the association welcomed around twenty students from the Lycée Félix le Dantec in Lannion, for an afternoon dedicated to discovering photonics, a key field for tomorrow’s technologies.

Since 2011, Semaine de l’industrie has been promoting industry and those involved in it through a range of educational and career discovery events: company visits, job dating, career forums, web conferences, classroom presentations, exhibitions, etc. Every year, this major national event helps to make the sector more attractive, particularly to young people.

To mark the occasion, Photonics Bretagne organised an educational visit on Tuesday 26 November to raise awareness among secondary school students of careers in photonics. Around twenty students from the Lycée Félix Le Dantec (in their final year of STI2D) attended a general presentation on photonics: what it is, the various applications (in telecommunications, medicine, the environment, agriculture, space, etc.), existing training courses in the Lannion area, careers and the local industrial fabric.

Then, in small groups, they discovered:

  • the biophotonics laboratory to understand what photonic technologies can do for agriculture,
  • the glass-working lathe and the fibre-drawing tower to find out more about the optical fibre manufacturing process,
  • and practical workshops where they could learn how to weld an optical fibre, measure the diameter of a hair using laser diffraction, or see how photonics can be used to detect micro-plastics in water.

It’s a great opportunity for young people to find out about innovative careers that are recruiting and to talk to professionals in the photonics industry.
